Breast Health at Every Age

Breast health needs change throughout your life. This guide covers what to expect, what to watch for, and what screening is recommended at each life stage.

Teens & Early Twenties

Breast development begins in puberty and continues into the early twenties. Asymmetry during development is normal — breasts rarely develop at exactly the same rate. Starting breast self-examination in your late teens builds the familiarity that makes future changes easier to notice. Benign lumps are common in this age group; a doctor should assess any persistent lump.

Twenties & Thirties

This is the ideal time to establish a monthly self-examination routine. Breasts can change with hormonal fluctuations through the menstrual cycle — examining at the same point each cycle gives the most consistent baseline. Pregnancy and breastfeeding significantly change breast tissue; changes noticed after returning to baseline deserve assessment.

Pregnancy & Postpartum

Significant breast changes during pregnancy are normal — tenderness, growth, and change in nipple appearance are all expected. Postpartum and breastfeeding bring further changes. Continue self-examination, allowing for the expected changes of lactation. Unusual lumps, persistent pain, or changes in one breast only warrant assessment.

Forties — Perimenopause & Screening

Many countries recommend mammogram screening beginning in the forties. Follow the guidelines for your region and discuss your individual risk profile with your doctor. Hormonal changes during perimenopause can cause breast changes — continued self-examination helps distinguish expected hormonal changes from new developments.

Fifties & Beyond — Menopause

After menopause, breast tissue changes in density, which can change how self-examination feels. Screening mammograms become more important. Any new lump, skin change, or nipple change after menopause deserves prompt assessment, as hormonal fluctuations are no longer a likely cause.
