Types of Breast Pain
Cyclical mastalgia is breast pain that varies with the menstrual cycle — typically most noticeable in the week before menstruation. Both breasts are usually affected, with an aching, heavy, or tender sensation. This is the most common type of breast pain and is generally benign.
Non-cyclical mastalgia is pain that doesn't follow the menstrual cycle. It may be constant or intermittent, and often affects one specific area. Causes include musculoskeletal issues (costochondritis), injury, large bra size without adequate support, and occasionally cysts or benign lumps.
Common Benign Causes
- Hormonal fluctuations through the menstrual cycle
- Poorly fitted bra — especially straps digging in or underwire sitting on breast tissue
- Muscle strain in the chest or shoulder
- Benign cysts
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Certain medications
When to Seek Assessment
Most breast pain is not a sign of cancer. However, seek medical assessment if: pain is persistent and severe, localised to one area and doesn't change with your cycle, accompanied by a lump or skin change, or new and different from any pain you've experienced before.
