Why Corsets Work for Full Busts
A well-made corset distributes the weight of the bust across the entire torso rather than just the shoulder straps. This eliminates back strain, creates a beautiful silhouette, and provides all-day support without discomfort. Heidi at ChimeraCostumes has documented her corset-making expertise extensively on TikTok and YouTube.
Full Bust Adjustment in Corsets
Standard corset patterns need an FBA at the bust panels. Grade the pattern up at the bust and add cup shaping. The process is similar to an FBA in a bodice pattern but applied to the corset's structural panels.
Boning Placement
Boning directly below the bust provides the most critical support. Aim for placement every 1.5–2 inches across the full-bust panels. Spiral steel boning flexes with movement — better for costume wear than rigid steel for most applications.
Lacing for a Full Bust
A full-bust corset needs more ease at the bust than at the waist. A properly fitted full-bust corset will have a slight lacing gap at the bust that narrows toward the waist — don't try to close it to the same measurement as the waist.
