Changes During Pregnancy
Breast changes often begin in the first trimester — tenderness, growth, and change in nipple and areola appearance are all normal. The breasts are preparing for lactation from very early in pregnancy. By the third trimester, colostrum (the first milk) may be produced. Wearing a comfortable, well-fitted maternity or nursing bra from mid-pregnancy onwards reduces discomfort.
Postpartum and Milk Coming In
Mature milk typically comes in 2–5 days after birth. Engorgement — swelling, firmness, and sometimes significant discomfort — is common as milk production establishes. Frequent feeding or expressing and gentle massage help manage engorgement. Cold compresses between feeds can reduce discomfort.
Common Postpartum Breast Issues
Mastitis is an infection of breast tissue causing flu-like symptoms alongside a hard, painful area in the breast. It is common during breastfeeding and requires medical treatment with antibiotics. Continue feeding or expressing through mastitis if possible — stopping suddenly can worsen symptoms.
Blocked ducts cause a hard lump with localised pain. Warm compresses, gentle massage, and frequent feeding usually resolve them within a day or two.
After Breastfeeding Ends
Breasts typically decrease in size and may change shape after breastfeeding ends. Resuming monthly self-examination once breast tissue has settled is recommended. Any new lumps or changes after the tissue has stabilised should be assessed.
